Now that fall is here, it’s the perfect time to prepare for the upcoming cold and flu season — one of the most important steps is getting the annual flu vaccine. Vaccinations protect more than just the individual getting it. It safeguards their family, coworkers and those in their community who may be more vulnerable.

Why get vaccinated?

• Safeguard one’s health: Getting a flu vaccine every year remains one of the best ways to protect oneself from the flu.

• It’s no cost to the member: Sutter Health Plus covers flu vaccines at no cost.

• The flu vaccine is safe: It’s recommended for everyone 6 months and older, including those who are pregnant and can pass protective antibodies to their baby.

• Enhanced Formulations: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that people 65 and older receive this formulation of the flu vaccine, as they offer stronger protection.

• The CDC also advises that people 50 and older who have had an organ transplant should receive the enhanced flu vaccine.

• Helps boost the immune system: Getting the flu vaccine does not guarantee that the individual won’t get the flu; however, it helps prevent serious complications that can lead to hospitalization if they do get the flu.

• Other respiratory viruses: With the flu, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and COVID-19 viruses potentially circulating at the same time, staying up-to date with vaccinations can help prevent getting sick with two or more respiratory viruses at the same time.

Timing is key!

The ideal time to get the flu vaccine is between September and November. This helps boost the immune system before flu viruses start circulating.

Getting the vaccine is easy.

Flu vaccines are available at the following locations:

• Sutter flu vaccine clinic: For members 6 months and older, schedule an appointment through My Health Online or by calling 844-987-6115.

• Network pharmacies: Find a network pharmacy and call ahead to check for availability to schedule an appointment.

• Primary care physician offices: Members can get the flu vaccine at the doctor’s office during a scheduled appointment. An office visit copay may still apply but the flu vaccine is covered at no cost.
