A new year marks an opportunity for a fresh start. Whether it’s eating healthier, exercising regularly, practicing self-care, or just breaking a few bad habits, New Year’s resolutions to improve health really can work. In one study, “resolvers” were about 10 times more likely to make lifestyle changes than “non-resolvers.” Set yourself up for success by following these tips.
Do What’s Important to You
Take time to identify the changes that would make a positive impact on your health and are the most meaningful to you. Be honest about your schedule, resources, and motivations to decide what is realistically achievable in the short and long term. If self-care is one of your resolutions, taking time for meditation or yoga or getting an extra hour of sleep throughout the week might be both meaningful and achievable.
Make a Plan
Research your impending resolution for what to expect, pick a start date, look for additional resources to help, and anticipate challenges you may face. By preparing a plan that outlines specific details and milestones to achieve, you are well on a path to success.
Start Small
Break down larger, more difficult goals into smaller ones that are easier to manage. Though quitting an unhealthy habit in its entirety is an option, oftentimes reducing a habit’s frequency may help you break habits in a lasting way. Sometimes, starting with one small change can make a big difference.
Track Progress
Sweeping changes don’t always happen overnight, and it can help to take note of successes to stay motivated. Whether using a mobile app or a written journal, keep track of your progress and each accomplishment or milestone to stay focused.
Have Fun
Keeping it fun may help you remain determined. For example, if you are trying to eat healthier, try one new nutritious recipe each week. If you are looking to increase your activity, start with an activity you enjoy, like walking a few days a week exploring nature. By making your journey enjoyable, it may increase your likelihood of success.
