When life becomes increasingly busy — whether it’s a promotion at work, caring for children or helping aging parents — it’s easy to let one’s own health needs fall through the cracks. However, as people age, prioritizing health becomes more imperative to living a longer life. The month of May is dedicated to bringing awareness to women’s health, focusing on the overall wellbeing of women. From reproductive health to mental wellness, nutrition and preventive care, every aspect is interconnected in forming a healthy foundation for women’s health.
One of the most important steps to maintain overall wellness is to maintain preventive care. Regular check-ups and screenings tailored to women’s needs are essential for early detection and intervention of potential health issues. However, according to a poll commissioned by the Alliance for Women’s Health and Prevention (AWHP) reveals, “nearly half of the women in the United States skipped a preventative healthcare service like an annual well visit, routine vaccination or recommended test or treatment in the past 12 months.” By staying proactive about health, women can help minimize the impact of potential health issues. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, women should schedule a well-woman visit with their doctor every year for a full checkup that includes:
- A physical exam
- Vaccine shots
- Setting health goals
- Screening tests to help check for diseases
As women move to later stages in life, their wellness visits will also change to include different tests and exams. Establishing a relationship with their primary care physician, staying connected to them and diligently notifying them of any notable health changes is important to maintain overall wellness.
Equally as important is mental health. According to the Mental Health Foundation, around 1 in 5 women have a common mental health problem, such as depression or anxiety. Women often bear unique pressures that can impact their mental health, including perinatal and postpartum depression. By recognizing these mental wellness challenges, offering support and resources for self-care, creates an environment where women can thrive.
Women’s health is not just about access to services, it’s about giving women the autonomy to make informed decisions about their health. When women are educated about their physical and mental health, it empowers them to shape their future for themselves and their family.
