Put a Flu Shot on Your To-do List

Posted by on Nov 15, 2019 in Health and Wellness

Cooler weather and shorter days mean fall is here—and so is the flu season. The flu is usually spread by an infected person when they cough, sneeze or talk. It’s highly contagious and can be especially serious for certain populations.

The best way to prevent flu-related illness, or help shorten an illness’ duration, is to get an annual flu vaccine. And, by getting a flu vaccine, you’re not only protecting yourself, but others.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone six months of age and older get the vaccine. Pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and people with certain health conditions, are at greater risk for severe flu complications.

Sutter Health Plus members can get flu vaccines at no out-of-pocket cost at their physician’s office, Sutter Walk-In Care, or a network pharmacy when available. Talk to your doctor about which flu vaccine product is right for you. While no appointment is necessary at the pharmacy or Sutter Walk-In Care, members should call ahead to verify the requested vaccine is in stock.

In addition, take everyday preventive steps to stop the spread of germs by avoiding contact with sick people, covering your nose and mouth before coughing or sneezing, and washing your hands often.

Already caught the flu?
If you think you’ve caught the flu, contact your doctor for diagnosis and any needed treatment. If you need care quickly, consider same-day care at a
Sutter Walk-In Care location or through a video visit.

For many men, it can take a near emergency to prompt a trip to the doctor. In fact, men are a third less likely than women to schedule routine preventive care exams and screenings (1). Some wait until health symptoms are persistent before seeking medical care. Others may feel uncomfortable during a regular checkup, fear an unpleasant diagnosis or think they are simply too busy. It’s important to make time for health, wellness and self-care—even if you feel healthy.
