Well-Woman Care

May 20, 2021 | 2021, Access, Health and Wellness

By June of last year, 41% of adults said they delayed or avoided medical care due to safety concerns related to COVID-19, with women delaying routine care more often than men (1). It’s important to keep up with routine and preventive care, which can help detect health issues early and reduce risk for chronic diseases and certain cancers.

For women, one step toward making healthy lifestyle choices and focusing on care specific for their unique health and wellness needs is to schedule a well-woman visit with a provider at least once a year. During well-woman visits, which can begin in adolescence, providers discuss recommended preventive care services that are age and developmentally appropriate. These services may be completed at a single visit or as part of a series of visits. The Sutter Health Plus Health Maintenance Guidelines provides a list of recommended screenings and immunizations for people of all ages.

Sutter Health Plus covers a variety of preventive care services at no cost share for members, including but not limited to preventive care screenings and exams, preconception health care and family planning services, and immunizations.

Preventive Care
Serious conditions like heart disease and stroke may be prevented. In addition, early detection and treatment of health problems can result in better outcomes. Members should talk to a provider about which preventive care services may be right for them.

COVID-19 Vaccination
Eligible members are encouraged to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment through My Health Online or by calling (844) 987-6115 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday or Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sutter Health Plus covers COVID-19 vaccinations from both in and out-of-network providers at no cost share for members. Preconception Health
Preconception health care includes steps taken to improve future chances of having a healthy baby and promote overall wellness in adults. Both women and men can benefit from preconception health care. As a preventive measure, preconception health care, including physical assessments, risk screenings, immunizations, and counseling, is covered at no cost share for members.

Members should talk with a provider about what is best for them at their next routine care appointment.

Mental Health
Between demanding careers and daily responsibilities to caregiving for children or other loved ones, life can sometimes feel overwhelming. It’s important to take time for self-care to reduce stress and enhance mental wellness. Mental Health self-care may include seeking support when needed.

Sutter Health Plus members may self-refer to a participating behavioral health provider for confidential, in-person, or virtual visits through U.S. Behavioral Health Plan, California (USBHPC).
