Pediatric Benefits: Helping Children Stay Healthy

Nov 18, 2019 | Access, Health and Wellness

Infancy, childhood and adolescence are important stages in a child’s healthy development. Help your child maintain good health by seeking regular preventive care, and acute care, when needed. Sutter Health Plus pediatric members have access to a variety of healthcare services—from well-child exams and immunizations to same-day and urgent care—to support a child’s growing mind and body.

Well-Child Exams
Regular well-child exams can help assess physical and emotional development, and overall health. In addition to performing a health and wellness check, healthcare providers can order specific screenings for vision and hearing, and administer immunizations. Well-child preventive care exams, including developmental screenings to diagnose and assess potential developmental delays, are covered at no out-of-pocket cost.

Members with doctors participating in My Health Online can create an account and log in to schedule appointments, view test results, send messages to a care team, and more.

Immunizations
One of the most important preventive healthcare services available is immunizations. Children should obtain the recommended immunizations to help prevent illness from spreading among the most vulnerable groups, such as new schoolmates, babies, or anyone with a weakened immune system. Many routine immunizations are provided to pediatric members at no out-of-pocket cost and can be scheduled along with a well-child exam. For the latest guidelines and information on age-based checkups, immunizations, screenings, and topics for discussion with a healthcare provider, download the 2019 Partnering for Your Best Health brochure.

Same-day Care
Childhood can bring unexpected accidents and illnesses. Whether a child needs care for an earache during the school day or a sports injury on the weekend, members can access convenient same-day care options. Sutter Walk-In Care and video visits with health providers are available daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and most holidays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both options are provided at the same out-of-pocket cost as a primary care visit.

Sutter Walk-In Care
Members age 18 months and older can visit any Sutter Walk-In Care location in Northern California for everyday illnesses and health needs. Overseen by a physician medical director, clinicians at the centers can diagnose, treat and prescribe most medications. Find the nearest Walk-In Care location by visiting sutterhealthplus.org/walk-in.

Video Visits
Members have access to video visits—same-day care for non-urgent, common illnesses, such as pink eye, rashes, sore throats and fevers—through My Health Online. Video visits are a convenient alternative for parents not wanting to take a sick child into the pediatrician’s office and potentially wait in the lobby.

Urgent Care
For more serious health concerns, members can access urgent and emergency care from any facility, in or out of the Sutter Health Plus network, without a referral. Urgent care is for non-emergency needs requiring prompt, medical attention. Common pediatric urgent care needs include minor accidents and falls, bleeding and cuts, and high fever.

Because urgent care locations do not treat serious life-threatening emergencies, children may actually be seen sooner than they would in an emergency department where the most serious emergencies are treated first.

Find in-network urgent care locations near your child’s school and home at sutterhealthplus.org/urgent. In the case of an emergency, dial 911 (when available) or go to the nearest hospital.

By staying on top of the recommended routine healthcare and knowing where to go for medical concerns that arise, parents can help their children achieve and maintain their best health.
